Will Vermilion Parish School Board follow Lafayette and not have public comment at end of school board meeting?

Just recently, the Lafayette Parish School Board stop letting the public address the school board members and superintendent at the end of each meeting. Will Vermilion Parish School Board be doing the same next month?
The answer is up in the air, but based on how board members on the school board’s new policy committee voted, the answer could be yes.
School board members Anthony Fontana, Stacy Landry and Chris Gautreaux voted in favor to stop public comment at the end of each meeting. School board member Laura LeBeouf voted against it.
LeBeouf said the public needs to have time to address the school board about issues, which is why she voted against the change.
School Board member Sara Duplechain agrees with LeBeouf.
“The public has every right to speak,” said Duplechain.
Thursday’s regular school board meeting may be the last meeting the public can address each board member or the superintendent without getting on the agenda. Starting in July, a new school year begins for the parish school system.
The public can still make comments to the board member or superintendent, but only items on the agenda.
Chris Gautreaux, who is the board president, said on Tuesday that the board is trying to find a way to keep board meetings orderly.
Last week Lafayette School Board President Tommy Angelle said public comment is still allowed prior to board votes, which fulfills state law, but additional comments typically afforded on any issue at the end of the meeting is now off the table.
Lafayette schools superintendent Donald Aguillard said in the Advocate, “The board meeting is, by state law, regulated to the items on the agenda,” he said. “At the end of the meeting, anyone could comment about anything, and that’s a potential problem, with people saying things we don’t know anything about or unrelated to the agenda. It’s too open-ended.”
Vermilion Parish School Superintendent Jerome Puyau said it will be the school board’s decision and not his.
Since January, Vermilion Parish school board meetings have gone longer than normal because of public comments from teachers and parents.
School Board President Chris Gautreaux has attempted to keep the comments flowing by allowing each person to speak for three minutes. There were times when the comment section has lasted just as long as the meeting.
Some school board members even tried to see if there was a law to stop visitors at school board meetings from videoing the meetings and putting it on social media. Video will continue at the meetings.
