Vermilion Parish schools aim for academic excellence

Vermilion Parish continues to be recognized for its high academic standards and its academic excellence.

On Thursday, the Louisiana Department of Education released School Performance Scores and Letter Grades for schools and districts.  These scores indicate students’ success on state assessments.  Though the spring 2013 assessments were more challenging than in previous years, Vermilion Parish moved from 15th in academic performance of its students to 11th in the state and is labeled a “B” district.

In order to honor the progress made by schools, Louisiana designates schools that achieve their growth target as a Top Gains school.  Fifteen percent of Vermilion Parish schools were recognized as TOP GAINS schools.  These schools will receive financial rewards from the LDOE due to their significant growth.  Sixty-eight percent of the district’s schools received a label of an “A” or “B”.  Vermilion Parish has no “F” schools.  Letter grades are defined as listed below.

A = 100 – 150

B = 85 – 99.9

C = 70 – 84.9

D= 50 – 69.9

F = 0 – 49.9

Vermilion Parish Schools continue to grow and excel which is a direct reflection on the dedicated teachers, staff, administrators, students, and parents.  As the achievement bar is raised, students continue to rise to the expectations.

 “Vermilion Parish schools are known for their collaborative efforts to ensure student academic success.  We are a pre-k – 12th grade system and are dependent upon one another.  Academic excellence requires teamwork from pre-K – 12th grade teachers and staff in all subject areas.  Every member of the team plays a vital part in the success of our students and our district,” states Ellen Arceneaux, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum.

Vermilion Parish Superintendent, Jerome Puyau, wishes to express his gratitude and appreciation to the parents, students, teachers, administrators, and district staff and for all of their hard work, dedication, and perseverance which was required for Vermilion to continue its academic excellence. “Our teachers, administrators, students, and district staff continue to work together to conquer the challenges of maintaining a program of educational excellence.  This achievement reflects the hard work of students and educators across the district. Vermilion Parish continues to provide a high quality academic program for every student’s readiness for college and careers in the 21st century,” says Superintendent Puyau.
