Vermilion Parish School Board increases pre-k tuition to $325 a month

One school board member did not support doubling the price of pre-k tuition, while another school board member negotiated the tuition hike.
When it was all said and done, pre-k tuition is increasing to $325 a month for the next school year.
Last week the school board education committee voted to increase pre-k tuition from $200 per month to $400 per month.
There are 41 students who pay tuition to attend pre-k in Vermilion schools. Most of the students who attend pre-k are going for free because the federal government is paying for them.
The school board is losing around $150,000 a year with the pre-k program. Raising tuition would help off set that loss.
School board member Sara Duplechain, who was not at the education committee, brought up the tuition hike at Thursday’s school board meeting.
She did not like raising it from $200 to $400.
“I can’t support $400 a month,” said Duplechain. “Some parents cannot afford it. Any way we can look at increasing it to $300 a month this year and $400 next year? It is tough at this time to double it .”
School board president Anthony Fontana understood what Duplachain was saying. Fontana said the school board has to increase tuition, but he was willing to meet her half way.
“I will support you if its $325 a month,” said Fontana.
Duplechain thanked Fontana and the school board voted in increase tuition next year to $325 a month.
