Vermilion Parish public schools will not have to make up lost days due to weather

If you are a student or employee of the school system in Vermilion Parish, in January you had a few days off.
The Christmas/New Year’s Day holiday break ended Jan. 6 but then there were in-service days for teachers and students did not report to school,
Schools closed again on Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Holiday, then again Jan. 24 for the weather.
They went to school Jan. 27 but were off Jan. 28 and Jan. 29 because of the icy conditions.
The district calender says the students must take part in a certain number of instructional minutes each year. With unexpected school closing this month, is Vermilion Parish behind in its minutes?
According to Jerome Puyau, the superintendent for the parish, said he is confident no extra days or minutes will needed to be added to the school year.
At the start of the school year, every school principal designs a daily schedule that exceeds the required state policy for instructional and non instructional minutes,” said Puyau.
“The instructional minutes that are accumulated can be used in the event of an emergency similar to the recent cold weather and hazardous conditions. We are positive that every school has accumulated enough instructional minutes to make up the days that were missed due to the cold weather. We do not foresee any additional days being added to the school calendar at this time,” he added.
