Strong winds damage cars, homes, trees

An Abbeville mother is grateful her family was not injured after a large tree fell on her mobile home Thursday night.
Savannah Broussard with her two children and a friend heard the winds picking up while watching television.
She looked out of her kitchen window and heard winds whipping around. She moved to the back of the trailer and then they began moving to the middle of the mobile home when they saw the branches break through the roof and settle into her living room and bedroom.
The tree falling happened at 8:13 p.m. and she called 911 at 8:14 asking for help.
The front door was jammed shut. The Abbeville Fire Department was called and had to rescue Broussard, her friend and two children. They crawled through a window at the east end of the mobile home.
Broussard, who had been renting the mobile home on South Lyman for only three months, said she lost everything because of the rain damage to the furniture and clothes.
Her family went to her mother’s home. Broussard said she was not able to sleep because she lost everything in her home.
On Friday, Broussard contacted the owner of the mobile home in search of another place to live and to see if they have homeowner’s insurance, which they did not.
“I am not sure what we are going to do,” said Broussard. “We are going to pile up somewhere.”
Broussard had just paid the rent last week and she asked her landlord for her rent back since they will not be living in the mobile home. Broussard said the landlord agreed to give her half of her rent.
If anyone wants to help Broussard, they can contact her at (337) 516 8264. She has four children under seven.
