Perry twins honored by Knights of Columbus 4th Degree

ERATH — The Perry twins from Kaplan were honored Saturday night by the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree.
Each year the Knights of Columbus has a Patriotic Essay Contest and they honor the top three at their annual installation and awards banquet.
This year the middle school students had to write a 500-word essay about what the American Flag would say. In the essay, students had to say where the American Flag has been, what it has gone through and how has it made America what it is today.
There were 51 entries. Molli Perry won first place, while her sister, Meredith, was third.
Luke Camel, who was not there, was second. The three winners are eighth grade students from Maltrait Memorial Catholic School in Kaplan.

Molli and other classmates worked in the class of eighth grade English teacher Dawn Camel this past school year. The entire process took about a month to write.
She said the class brained storms different ideas and then began to write outlines for each essay.
“It was easier by having all of our classmates work on theirs” said Molli.
The 15-year-old Perry twins learned where they placed at the end of school. Molli was surprised to learn she won.
“I was very surprised because they had other very good essays,” she said.
While Molli’s essay won, she admits her sister’s essay was well written and could have easily won, as well.
Molli won $200, Camel $100 and Meredith won $50.
The Perrys are the daughters of Sen. Jonathan Perry and, their mother, Christine. Their mother attended the banquet. Sen. Perry was out of the country visiting Cuba.
Last month he spent weeks away from his family while in session in Baton Rouge.
Despite him not being there at times, Molli would not trade him.
“It works out well. I love him,” said Molli. “He is the best dad anyone can ask for. He is amazing. It is tough at times not being able to see him, but I know I can never have anyone better than him. He is the best at what he does.”
