Omega Protein in Intracoastal City wins award

Omega Protein Corporation, a nutritional product company and a leading integrated producer of omega-3 fish oil and specialty protein products, is being praised by Louisiana Economic Development (LED), a division of the Louisiana state government, for its record of community service and “excellence in manufacturing.”
The Company’s menhaden reduction facility in Intracoastal City is the recipient of LED’s 2014 Lantern Award.
Lantern Awards are given yearly to one company in each of the state’s eight regions for their demonstrated commitment to the communities in which they operate. Omega Protein Corporation’s Abbeville facility represents the state’s Acadiana region as this year’s Lantern Award winner.
In Louisiana, Omega Protein Corporation is supporting important charitable causes and engaging the surrounding community.
The Company is fighting against breast cancer on a local level, and combating Alzheimer’s Disease with their sponsorship of the annual “Fishing for Memories” fishing tournament.
Omega Protein Corporation also helps the 8th District of the U.S. Coast Guard in Louisiana by contributing to the Coast Guard Foundation.
Their Lantern Award also recognizes the Company’s continued support of the Abbeville Fire Department, area schools, and the Louisiana Saltwater Series, a recreational fishing tournament that strengthens community awareness for area marine conservation efforts.
“We’re all honored to be recognized as a community leader in Louisiana,” said Al Vidrine, General Manager of Omega Protein Corporation’s Abbeville facility. “Our employees and our community are also our family, and we take great pride in representing Abbeville as an exemplary manufacturer and community member.”
LED Secretary Stephen Moret announced in an agency press release, “The 2014 Lantern Awards recognize Louisiana-based manufacturers who demonstrate true quality in their work and genuine commitment to their local communities.”
According to LED, factors that determine the award, whose winners are selected by the Louisiana Association of Planning and Development Districts, include “investments in employment growth and facility expansion,” and sustainability. Omega Protein’s facility in Abbeville is its most productive plant in the Gulf of Mexico. The company also operates facilities in Moss Point, Miss., and in the Chesapeake Bay in Reedville, Va.
