Laurie Hulin plans to run for district judge in Vermilion Parish

Former Assistant District Attorney Laurie Hulin has announced her candidacy for District Judge, Fifteenth Judicial District, Division G. The election district comprises all of Vermilion Parish. The seat is currently held by Judge Durwood Conque, who will retire at the end of this term. The election will be held on November 4, 2014.
Hulin was born and raised in Vermilion Parish. She is a resident of Cow Island, and grew up in Maurice. She married Shane Langlinais, and is the daughter of Jewitt and Ella Hulin. She is the daughter-in-law of Mike and Ann Langlinais. Hulin is an experienced prosecutor, who served in Tennessee and Louisiana. She served as Assistant District Attorney General in Nashville, Tennessee, where she prosecuted cases involving family violence. In 2007, she returned to her home parish of Vermilion to begin work as an Assistant District Attorney for the Fifteenth Judicial District. She prosecuted both felony and misdemeanor cases, including homicides and all child sex abuse crimes in Vermilion Parish. Hulin recently resigned as Assistant District Attorney in order to seek the position of District Judge. She continues to serve as Town Prosecutor for the Towns of Delcambre and Gueydan.
Hulin is a graduate of Vermilion Catholic High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University School of Law. While in law school, Hulin taught a law course at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in New Orleans.
She gained practical experience by working as a judicial law clerk for the Fifteenth Judicial district court and civil law clerk for a local attorney as well as a clerk for the Louisiana Senate Education Committee. She was a Court Appointed Special Advocate, speaking for victims of child abuse and neglect in juvenile court. She shared her experience as a prosecutor by serving as an instructor for Vermilion Parish law enforcement personnel and for the UL Continuing Education law class.
Hulin’s father and father-in-law both had long and successful careers as cattlemen and public servants in Vermilion Parish. Jewitt Hulin, who served thirty-two years with the Vermilion Parish Police Jury and Mike Langlinais, who served twenty-four years with the Vermilion Parish Assessor’s Office, taught her the importance of giving your time and talents to help better your community. Following this advice, Hulin committed herself to being an active member of the community. She strongly supports local youth organizations such as 4-H and the Boys and Girls Club. She is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, Louisiana District Attorney's Association, Confrère d'Abbeville (Giant Omelet Festival), Junior League of Abbeville, FUEL Vermilion, and Fortnightly.
In announcing her candidacy, Hulin stated that she feels her life experiences, commitment to public service, and strong work ethic uniquely qualify her to serve as District Judge.
“I will commit myself to listen to both sides of every case and to apply the law impartially. I will be both fair and firm. One of the most important jobs as a Judge is to ensure that there is integrity in the justice system. I will work hard every day as your District Judge to uphold that integrity. I respectfully ask the public to join me in my endeavor and candidacy for Judge.”
