Kaplan woman sentenced to five years for negligent homicide

A Kaplan woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for negligent homicide in connection to the 2013 death of an infant.
Judge Laurie Hulin sentenced Shanee Lege, 24, to five years of hard labor with the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Hulin handed down the sentence on Friday. Two years of the sentence are suspended.
Upon her release, Lege will be placed on three years of supervised probation. She will have to report to the Office of Probation and Parole in Lafayette within 24 hours of her release.
Lege will also be required to work toward obtaining a GED if not a high school graduate diploma. Lege will state her place of residence and must seek permission from the court or probation officer for any change of address. She will undergo random drug screens at her own expense as dictated by her probation officer.
A grand jury indicted Lege in March of 2015 on one count of negligent homicide. According to the indictment, a five-month-old died on Sept. 14, 2013, due to Lege’s negligence. The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident, of which no details were provided.
Lege initially pleaded not guilty to the charge. She withdrew that plea this past January, changing her plea to no contest.
Suzanne DeMahy represented Lege during Friday’s sentencing. Roger Hamiltion Jr., assistant district attorney with the 15th Judicial District, represented the state.
Lege has two years to file a post conviction relief application.
