Kaplan man killed in pedestrian crash in Lafayette Parish

LAFAYETTE PARISH – On Thursday, July 28, at approximately 11:20 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on U.S. Hwy. 167 near Teljean Road in Lafayette Parish.
The crash claimed the life of 57-year-old Brent Abshire of Kaplan.
Preliminary investigation revealed that 33-year-old Laura Gallegos of Abbeville was driving a 2008 Chevrolet HHR south on U.S. 167 in the left lane. Gallegos was in the process of switching to the right lane when she struck Abshire who was standing in the middle of the roadway. After the initial impact with the Chevy, Abshire’s body came to rest in the right lane of travel. While in the roadway, Abshire’s body was then struck by a 2006 Nissan Altima driven by 20-year-old Janee Segura of Abbeville, and a 2010 Honda Accord driven by 18-year-old Luke Coa of Lafayette.
The Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced Abshire deceased. All three drivers were properly restrained and were not injured. The drivers voluntarily submitted to a breath test, and no detectable alcohol was found in any of the drivers. It is unknown if Abshire was impaired at the time of the crash. This crash remains under investigation.
Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night, is dangerous and should be avoided. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night.
