Forgotten lamb chops win grand champion in Erath cook-off

ERATH - Todd Bodin is not afraid to try something new like barbecuing a rack of lamb - something he has never done before.
He went shopping to try and find the right kind of meat to put on his pit for the 19th Annual Fourth of July Erath Celebration Barbecue Cook-Off this weekend.
He could have went with bacon wrapped shrimp, maybe even cooking crabs or some type of fish on the pit.
Then he saw it - a rack of lamb. How hard could it be? Season it. Throw it on the pit and then forget about it.
The crazy thing is that is exactly what he did: seasoned it, put on the pit and he forgot about it.
When he remembered about his meat, he took it off the pit and figured it was ready for judging.
Bodin’s lamb chops were placed in the “open” category of the cook-off. There were beef, pork, chicken and open category (a type of meat other than pork, beef, or chicken).
His forgotten lamb chops impressed the judges so much, that it was declared the “Grand Champion” of the cook-off. His dish scored the highest out of all the categories.
He won a trophy and $250 cash for his top dish.
“When I bought it, I knew it would be something different,” he said after accepting his trophy.
One judge said it was so tender, it melted off the bone.
Bodin’s lamb chops also took first place in the “open” category.
This year’s bar-be-que cook-off was one of the largest cook-offs Erath has had. There were 45 total entries. The pork, alone, had 16 entries.
