Abbeville sales tax increases after flood

Tourist Commission also sees boost

While most of Vermilion Parish continues to see a down turn in sales tax collection for the last few months, the city of Abbeville actually had an increase in collections in August.
The School Board, Police Jury and Sheriff’s Office once again had a drop of 14 percent in sales tax collections for the month of August.
But Abbeville bucked the trend with its 9 percent increase in sales tax collection. The city collected $25,000 more in sales tax than a year ago.
This past August the city collected $301,131.
One reason for the increase in sales tax collections in Abbeville could be because of the Aug. 13-15 historical floods in the parish. Days after the flood, residents began purchasing items to repair their flooded homes and businesses.
The flood did help the Vermilion Parish Tourist Commission. Because flooded residents had to live in hotels and motels in Vermilion Parish, the tourist commission collected more money.
The tourist commission, which gets its revenue from the renting of hotel and motel rooms, was up 18 percent or about $1,000 from a year ago.
Delcambre, a community that had no flood damage, also had an increase in sales tax collection. Delcambre collected 31 percent more or around a $4,000 sales tax increase from a year ago.
Kaplan collected $51,000, which is about $2,000 less than a year ago.
The town of Erath had a drop of about $1,000 or 7 percent less. The collected $19,300.
The town of Gueydan had a 24 percent drop in collections. The town collected $11,221 or $3,000 less than a year ago.
Three months into the fiscal year, the School Board is down 13 percent or about $200,000, in sales tax collections.
The Sheriff’s Office is also down around 12 percent on the year.
