Abbeville man charged with murder after shooting

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, one person has been arrested and booked into the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center Monday in connection to an early morning shooting that left one person dead.
At approximately 2:22 a.m. on Monday, deputies responded to gun shots fired on Pine Street near Abbeville. When deputies arrived on scene they located a male victim lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds to the body as well as a female with a gunshot wound to the upper arm.
The shooting suspect has been identified as Davian Layne Bessard, 21, of Abbeville, who has been charged with 1 count of 2nd-Degree Murder with bond set at $500,000.
The deceased victim has been identified as 22-year-old Jeremiah Carltrell Walker of Maurice.
Sheriff Couvillon says that detectives are attempting to determine the motive into the shooting, but says that both Bessard and Walker engaged in exchange of gunfire and it was determined that Bessard fired the shots that fatally wounded Walker and that a 17-year-old female was struck with a projectile from Walker’s gun.
The 17-year-old female victim of Abbeville was taken to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries and later released.
