Boys and Girls Club hosts local United Way Day of Action
United Way recently held a National Day of Action, with multiple areas around Acadiana holding local events. One of the locations was at the Boys and Girls Club here in Abbeville.
Three classrooms were devoted to instructional activities that would benefit the children in attendance. One of them was a reading room, where children were gathered as a teacher read to them and other reading activities took place.
The two other rooms featured a regular activity at the Boys and Girls Club. “Budget Buddy” is an activity that teaches the children the importance of learning how to handle money. It’s a skill that will help a lot of them in the future, and many were active in learning the skill throughout the day of action.
According to the press release sent out by United Way prior to the event, “nearly 500 volunteers” were expected to help children out across Acadiana. They came “from the community and area businesses/organizations,” the press release said. “[They] will help build a better Acadiana through service opportunities that focus on education, earnings and essentials.
“The volunteers aim to make meaningful changes in the lives of individuals and families through hands-on projects,” it added.
Other projects held on the National Day of Action included Stuff The Bus, which aimed to gather school supplies and uniforms from donors; Shoebox Projects, whichwould provide for families in need by collecting personal hygeine items; and Lend Your Muscles, which aimed to get people out to help clean up and restore their communities.
