Lady Wildcats get big district win

The Abbeville Lady Wildcats entered their first district game against the Kaplan Lady Pirates on a three game losing streak.

Despite the close game at halftime, the Lady Wildcats were able to step up their game and end up winning by a route over Kaplan, 49-28.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter by out-scoring the Lady Pirates 13-4.

If the first quarter was all Abbeville, then the second quarter was all Kaplan.

The Lady Pirates were able to close the gap to 20-20 with three seconds remaining on the clock. The Lady Wildcats drove the ball down the court and Christina Hackshaw hit a three as time expired to give the Lady Wildcats the 23-20 lead at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats just took over in the second half.

They scored 18 points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth quarter.

As well as the offense played, the defense played even better, as they only allowed Kaplan to score eight total points combined in the third and fourth quarters.

“We came out a little flat in the first half,” Abbeville Head Coach Dean Dronet said. “We were able to make some corrections in the second half and come out and play the style of basketball I know we can play.”

Leading the charge for the Lady Wildcats in scoring was Barbara Bryant.

Bryant scored a team and game high 18 points. She was also able to pull down four rebounds.

Jacqueline Braxton was not far behind Bryant as she scored 12 points. Braxton also led the team in rebounds with seven.

Bianca Levy and Christina Hackshaw contributed to the rout, by scoring eight and five points respectively.

Jada Darby, Evelyn Briggs and Raven Boudreaux rounded out the scoring for the Lady Wildcats as they each scored two points.

“I’m very proud of our girls and the way they played in the first half,” Lady Pirates Head Coach Courtney Hargrave said. “I think once we can put the way we played in the first half into a full game we will be alright.”

Kendra Gums led the way in scoring for the Lady Pirates with 11 points.

Lauren Touchet and Kaylie Lejeune got in on the scoring action by scoring six and four points apiece.

Dayne Bass, Lexie Breaux and Caroline Touchet each were able to add two points.

Janayla Leonard rounded out the scoring for the Lady Pirates as she hit a free throw early in the fourth quarter.
