District Titles on the Line

There are two district titles that could very well be decided Friday night. The Vermilion Catholic Eagles have the title already, but Hanson Memorial, their opponent in Friday night’s contest, have a lot of incentive to win.

A win for them is at least a piece of the district title.

They are 4-1 in district play right now and don’t have another district contest. If VC loses to Hanson, then they can split the district title assuming VC beats Ascension Episcopal next week. If VC were to lose the next two weeks, then Hanson wins it outright.

However, if Hanson loses on Friday night, the Eagles have it no matter what happens against Ascension.

North Vermilion, meanwhile, is hoping for a win to maintain their shot at a district title this week.

The defending district co-champs have a lot on the line against a tough Notre Dame team that most coaches in the district have agreed are the best in the district.

With a win over a tough Kaplan team at the beginning of district play, the Patriots have themselves set up for at least a second place spot, but that might not be good enough for the ambitious team.

If North Vermilion loses, there is a chance for a three-way split if Kaplan can knock off Notre Dame in week ten. All three teams could have a one-loss district season.

It would be the second year in a row that Kaplan and North Vermilion have split the title, and it would be a huge blow to Notre Dame, who came into the district a favorite to win it all by most of the coaches in the area.
