Vision of Hope sponsors ‘Black Tie Affair’ event

Vision of Hope, a local nonprofit organization under the direction of Bishop B. K. Steven, sponsored a ‘Black Tie Affair’ banquet on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Comeaux Park Recreation Center.
This event was a fundraiser for the renovation of the old Herod school building located on Martin Luther King Street in Abbeville.
The program’s master of ceremony, Minister Travis Harrison, opened the program by saying to those in attendance, “this is about moving the vision forward and the change is starting with me.”
He also stressed the need for change and for those present to look within themselves and say “this is my community and to stand up and make a difference, not just accepting what comes their way.”
The guest speaker for this event was former Senator Fred Hoyt. He emphasized the need to learn from your mistakes. He said it is OK to make a few mistakes as long as you learn from them, and what not to do.
The organization presented a power point which showed the old Herod school as it is, along with a layout for the future facility showing landscape designs for the grounds to beautify the area, as well as provide a safe and flexible play area for the youth. The layout also included an area with a pond to provide peace and serenity to others.
Bishop Stevens stressed the need for the community to come together and said, “you are only as big as your dream.” He also encouraged the group to come together and work to develop a safe place for the youth and most importantly, “have a new disposition about life through transition”.
Bishop Stevens talked about the upcoming renovations with the help of the local community and Abbeville native Rev. Walter August.
Rev. August will be coming to Abbeville, along with 40 members of his church, to assist with the renovation effort to the building, as well as on the grounds.
The affair was well attended and supported by members of the community, local businesses and City of Abbeville officials.
Entertainment was provided by a jazz ensemble from Crowley.
